Purpose of Trips
Jamii Travels provides travel advising and booking services to clients who have an interest in traveling to the African continent. Our knowledge of Africa and connections within the continent, unique group tour itineraries, and specialized knowledge about the logistics of African groups traveling to remote destinations, helps us stand apart from others.
Expertise
Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Michel grew up amid the terror of the Great War of Africa. He witnessed the torture of his father, who was singled out for his political beliefs, violence against his family and endured torture of his own. Much of Michel’s childhood was ravaged by the death and decay of a war that claimed the lives of 3.8 million people, his father included.
Forced to leave his home as a refugee at the age of 11, Michel has since travelled to many African countries, witnessing and researching firsthand the challenges facing the developing world, but also the beauty of the communities and people who live there.
Today, Michel is a United Nations Fellow for People of African Descent, an accomplished motivational speaker, leadership facilitator and award-winning author of a children’s book entitled Child Soldier: How Boys and Girls are used in war.
He created Jamii Travels after attending the University of Toronto’s African Studies program to provide travel advising and booking services to clients who have an interest in traveling to the African continent. Michel and his team’s knowledge of Africa and connections within the continent, unique group tour itineraries, and specialized knowledge about the logistics of African groups traveling to remote destinations, helps make these trips a must travel experience.
The breakdown of our different group trip options:
- Educational/Cultural Trips: will be 5-14 days in length and will average $5-8k per person, which is inclusive of air/accommodations/transfers/meals. This trip will always take place in Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and Tanzania then expanded after 2 years to include other African countries. Because all clients are different such that each trip differs slightly, all trips focus on three core educational areas: cultural, historic and contemporary African societies.
Our company already has the advantage of working with a Safari and Tour Company in Uganda called AJ Tours & Travel that has expertise on routes, cultural sites, places to visit, stores and laundromats. Leadership training for the guides will be developed in-house using some outside material. There are many similar organizations that will be good sources of information.

TOURISM
Glossary
Jamii – A Swahili word meaning Community
Pan-Africanism – is a worldwide movement that aims to encourage and strengthen bonds of solidarity between all indigenous and diaspora ethnic groups of African descent. Based on a common goal dating back to the Atlantic slave trade, the movement extends beyond continental Africans with a substantial support base among the African diaspora in the Americas and Europe. There are several videos by Professor Hakim Adi and Thomas Wakiaga that speak in detail about what the idea is about.
